Waking Up the Bees: Dusty’s Bees Head to The Orhcards For Almond Pollination
As winter fades and the first signs of spring appear, it’s time for us at Dusty’s Bees to wake up our hives and move them into the orchards for almond pollination. This annual migration is crucial for both the bees and the farmers, as almond trees rely heavily on honeybee pollination to produce their harvest. For our bees, the orchards provide some of the first fresh pollen of the season, jumpstarting colony growth after a long winter.
However, getting our bees into the orchards is no easy task. Timing is everything, and the unpredictable weather often adds an extra layer of challenge. We’ve had our fair share of struggles, from navigating muddy roads to working around cold snaps that can slow down bee activity. Despite these obstacles, the effort is always worth it. Once in the orchards, our bees quickly get to work, and before long, the colonies start growing rapidly, producing an abundance of brood.
We’re fortunate to work with almond growers who prioritize bee health and safe farming practices. Some even plant cover crops, providing an additional pollen source before the orchards bloom. This extra nutrition helps strengthen our colonies, ensuring they are in top shape for almond pollination. By working together, both beekeepers and farmers benefit. Strong healthy bee colonies mean better almond pollination, which ultimately leads to a more productive almond harvest.
Once the almond pollination season wraps up, we waste no time in bringing our bees back home. It’s important to return them before local wildflowers begin blooming, as this marks the start of the honey flow. After the hustle and bustle of almond pollination, it’s rewarding to see our bees thriving in their natural environment, gathering nectar to create the delicious, raw honey that our customers love. The cycle continues, and we wouldn’t have it any other way at Dusty’s Bees!
